Our DTES Marginalized Artists Training Program capped off a successful art lab experiment with our Jan. 27 exhibit closing reception and non-fashion show. Throughout the month, 10 Emily Carr Institute students joined 20 program participants for an open studio taking over the front gallery. From the one evening exhibit of more than 40 works, some were produced individually, others collaboratively.

The Emily Carr students were enrolled in the Institute?s inaugural Community Arts Practices seminar class in 2006, and invited to collaborate in a Downtown Eastside project.

Out of the Rain is designed to support artists living with or facing homelessness. Many artists in our neighbourhood face the combined obstacles of poverty and mental health issues, and may also face addiction and trauma issues. By providing studio space, access to materials, professional artist mentors, and a safe and encouraging environment, artist?s goals can be supported and their lives improved.
